Pamir Plateau by Motorbike

A 17-day, ~5,000 km motorcycle journey from Almaty through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan — from city streets and mountain passes to the wide, silent spaces of the Pamir Plateau.

We started in Almaty and rode toward Bishkek and Osh, then through the Fergana Valley to Dushanbe, arriving from the north. From there the road turned south and followed the Tajik bank of the Panj River, with Afghanistan close across the water and the Pamirs rising ahead. Near Langar the journey changed character: the road climbed toward Khargush, Alichur, Murghab and the wind-swept plateau, then over Ak-Baital Pass. The return brought us back along the high Kyrgyz borderlands, around the eastern shore of Issyk-Kul, through Karkara and finally back to Almaty from the east.

The road as I remember it

This map recreates the journey on real roads from memory. The line follows the mountain roads and borderland corridors we rode: the Tajik bank of the Panj River, the Kyrgyz high road near China, and the eastern shore of Issyk-Kul.

What stayed with me

17 days · 5,000 km

Seventeen days on the road, roughly 5,000 km across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Ak-Baital Pass

Ak-Baital was one of the highest points of the journey — 4,650 m of thin air, cold wind and pure mountain scale.

Martian plateau

The Pamir Plateau felt almost unreal: wide, empty, mineral landscapes above 4,000 metres.

Issyk-Kul

Issyk-Kul was a calm blue pause after days of dust, wind and altitude.
